Intructions for Starting a Run
Version of May 12, 2008
Trouble starting MIDAS or Frontend daemons?
Try using pendaq.
pc7196]$ pendaq -help
Assuming all pc's are up and running, and the drivers are installed in the
frontends, you may follow this procedure.
If you reboot FE0 or FE1 or FE2, you must re-install the drivers
for the CAMAC interface (FE0), VME interface (FE1) and Acqiris Digitizer (FE2)
You should start fe0 program before fe1 and fe2. You will most likely start all
the programs from the Backend computer (pc7196), so you might want to open
at least five terminal windows.
- In the first terminal start the daemons:
You should check to see if the daemons are already running before you
start them so you don't have multiple instances of them. If the daemons are already running
(if they are "green" on the status->programs webpage), you don't have to restart them!
If you suspect they are causing problems, you can kill them, then restart them. You can kill
them by executing the following command TWICE for each process (mhttpd, mevb, mlogger, analyzer),
for example,
pc7196]$ killall mlogger
pc7196]$ killall mlogger
mlogger: no process killed
Then:
pc7196 ~]$ cd ~/online/
pc7196 ~]$ mhttpd -D
pc7196 ~]$ mevb -D
pc7196 ~]$ mlogger -D
pc7196 ~]$ cd online/analyzer_root
pc7196 analyzer_root]$ ./analyzer -D
- In the second terminal start Frontend0:
pc7196 ~]$ ssh -Y pc6166

enter canonical pibeta password (only if asked!)
pc6166 ~]$ cd ~/online/fe0
pc6166 fe0]$ ./fe0 -i 0 -h pc7196
The key "-i 0" tells it that it is the #0 frontend.
The key "-h pc7196" tells it the host (or Backend) where MIDAS is running.
- In the third terminal start Frontend1:
pc7196 ~]$ ssh -Y pc809

enter canonical pibeta password
pc809 ~]$ cd ~/online/fe1
pc809 fe1]$ ./fe1 -i 1 -h pc7196
- In the fourth terminal start Frontend2:
pc7196 ~]$ ssh -Y sluser@pcp027992

enter canonical pibeta password (while the user here is "sluser")
pcp027992 ~]$ cd ~/online/fe2
pcp027992 fe2]$ ./fe2 -i 2 -h pc7196
- In the fifth terminal start the Slow Control Frontend:
pc7196 ~]$ ssh pc4926
pc4926 ~]$ cd online/sc_fe
pc4926 sc_fe]$ ./sc_fe -h pc7196
- Now start mozilla/firefox and go to:
http://pc7196
To see our status page. Click on programs to make sure you have the full set.
Click on status, make sure all programs listed are "green".
Start the run.
In the messages section you may see a "db_get_data,ERROR" red line.
Do not worry about this, it is a bug in the latest version of MIDAS.
